There’s something wildly sacred about getting married in a place where your life already lives. As a travel wedding photographer, I’m constantly drawn to celebrations rooted in meaning—and Rylie and Jon’s intimate backyard wedding in Illinois was exactly that. Not a venue. Not a blank slate. I first met Rylie in college, and seeing her marry her high school sweetheart—the one she kept in her heart through years of long-distance, different colleges, and athletic schedules—felt like watching destiny finally show up.
They came back to her hometown in Illinois, to the house where she grew up, to celebrate in a way that was entirely them: raw, intimate, and full of life. The backyard wasn’t just a space—it was a memory, a playground, a witness to all the love that had led them here. Nothing was staged. Everything felt alive. Everything felt honest.
Grandma helping set up linens, your little brother’s friends setting out place settings, your dad working on the lawn and landscaping for months before the big day. No pressure of an overproduced wedding, just focused on feeling at ease, present, and loved.
Why Getting Married at Home Feels Different
I got to Rylie’s family home early on Saturday. Everyone was just beginning their day: bridesmaids were making bouquets on the front porch, younger siblings were waking up, and the morning light was soft and alive. Watching Rylie put her dress on in her parents’ room and Jon play football with his groomsmen while getting ready in his family home felt like witnessing life itself.
As the guests began to arrive, I watched everyone—friends and family from different chapters of her life—exist in the kaleidoscope of memories that is her home. And as she walked out of her childhood home and toward her future, I couldn’t help but shed a tear.
